A Doctor's Interview
Mauro Bainy
Curi has been a doctor for 28 years, specialized in general surgery, gynecology, obstetrics and oncology,
Mauro works in 4 hospitals at Porto Alegre and one at Sao Jeronimo, a small city
in Brazil’s country side.
How was your formation?
``I entered in university in 1982 and graduated in 1987.
After graduating I did medical residence for Gynecology and Obstetrics for 2
years, and after that I did residence in Ontological Surgery, cancer surgery,
with focus in gynecology and mammary. That took me 2 more years´´
What is your workload per week?
``An average of 72 hours per week, when there’s nothing
extra on weekends like parturition and serious cases.
I do a 24
hours on call once a week in Sao Jeronimo, basically doing parturitions and
emergencies, and from Monday to Friday I go to my Office in the morning and do
surgeries in the afternoon.´´
What you think about Medicine today?
`` Medicine
is a profession that still has a great labor market. The salary compared with
other professions is quite a lot better. Is a job that still got a huge labor
market in Brazil, mainly in the countryside, because the doctors are too
concentrated in big cities nowadays in Brazil.
Is it exciting to be a doctor?
`` It is awesome, very cool. It’s a job very different from
the others. My area, for example, my specialty applies all the basic areas of
medicine such as clinic and surgery, so it take a lot of study and training, a
lot of hours studying. I read and study 3 hours a day in average.´´
