The Berlin Wall Has Fallen

In 1989, the Berlin Wall fell, wich marked the imminent end of the Cold War's conflict. In 1989, people wearing mallets and other tools knocked down the wall in a protest bradcasted to the world. With the fall of the geographical barrier, started a process that ended in the reunification of Germany in October 1990.
The Berlin Wall was built to symbolize the Cold War's division of East from West Germany and of eastern from western Europe. The west, led by the United States, had capitalism as economic system. On the other hand, the east, headed by the old USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics), was adherent to socialism.
The original wall was built in secret by soldiers in only one night, after Walter Ulbritcht claimed, in an interview about the division, that no one intended to build any wall. That wall, made of barbed wire and cinder blocks, had to be replaced by a series of concrete walls (up to 15 feet [5 metres] high) that had 156km of extension, topped with barbed wire and guarded by 300 watchtowers, gun emplacements, and mines. For 28 years, the 28 mile Berlin Wall had split the city in two, in the middle of big routes and divided a nation with two million tons of concrete, 700,000 tonnes of steel, attack dogs, tank traps, death strips and tripwires. While its dangers kept most GDR citizens at bay, others were spurred on to overcome it, by digging under it, hiding in car trunks, flying over it in hot-air balloons, and even surfing around.
According to historians, about 191 people were killed and 5.000 were captured trying to cross the wall, while other 5.000 East Germans managed to actually cross the Berlin Wall and reach West Berlin Safely.
