Water Shortage in Brazil

Just a reduction in the amount of rainfall that news soon reached: It´s going to lake water in your city. In March after a long dry season, the levels of the reservoir Sistema Cantareira, which supplies the metropolitan region of São Paulo, reached 15%, the lower level since the system was built in 1974. The normal level for this period is like 60%.

In the last 45 years, the water volume desalinated in the world rose basically zero to 60 billion liters per day. The solution, which started in 1970 in the Middle East, today is already present in 150 countries. The reason of this rose it´s simple: the fresh water is becoming increasingly scarce, mainly because of population growth and the expansion of industrial activities and the agricultural system.

In Brazil, the hydroelectric power plants are responsible for more than two thirds of the electricity. So the lack of rainfall and the water shortage affect the supply of electricity, causing blackouts, rationing, etc.

With population and cities growth and the economic development increases the demand for water resources and the fresh water begins to be insufficient for all.  The possibility of the water scarcity in the future warns Brazil of the necessary to reducing their dependence of the hydroelectric plants. In a not very distant future, the scenario is drawing to countries fighting for more water and less for oil.
