The September 11 attack
The September 11 attacks (also referred to as September 11, September 11th) were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda on the United States in New York City and the Washington, D.C. In the morning of that day, nineteen terrorists kidnapped four commercial aeroplanes of passengers. Four passenger airliners were hijacked by 19 al-Qaeda terrorists to be flown into buildings in suicide attacks. Two of the planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, were crashed into the North and South towers, respectively, of the World Trade Center complex in New York City, Killing all on board and many of the people that worked in the buildings. Both buildings collapse two hours after the impacts, destroying neighboring buildings and causing varied other damages. The third aeroplane of passengers colidiu against the Pentagon, the headquarters of the Department of Defence of United States, in the County of Arlington, Virgínia, in the surroundings of Washington, D.C. The fourth aeroplane fell in a next open field to Shanksville, in the Pensilvânia, after some of his passengers and crewmen have tried to restart the control of the aircraft of the kidnappers, that to had reencaminhado in the direction of the North American capital. There were not survivors in any one of the flights. The attacks killed 2,996 people (including 19 hijackers) and caused at least $10 billion in property and damage of infrastructure. In accordance with the examiners were died 227 civilians and the 19 kidnappers that were on board of the airplanes. The overwhelming majority of the victims were civil, including citizen of more than 70 countries. The United States responded to the attacks by launching the War on Terror: the country invaded Afghanistan to overthrow the Taliban, who harbored the terrorists of al-Qaeda. The United States also approved the USA PATRIOT. Many other countries also strengthened their anti-terrorism legislation and expanded law enforcement powers. The damage to the Pentagon was repaired within a year, and the Pentagon Memorial was built next to the building. The reconstruction process was initiated at the World Trade Center. In 2006, a new office tower was completed on site, the World Trade Center. The tower One World Trade Center, built on the site, is one of the tallest skyscrapers in North America, with 541 meters high. Three more buildings are planned to be built on the site of the former Twin Towers, and a memorial to the victims of the attacks already completed. The National Memorial Flight 93 began construction November 8, 2009 and the first phase of construction was completed on the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks in 2011.
There are several movies that were made from the event, playing the own of various point of views. The most popular are: "United Flight 93" (2006), "World Trade Center" (2005), "September 11" (2002), "War on Terror" (2008), "State Secrets" (2006), "Reine on Me" (2007), "So strong and so close" (2011). The "Flight United 93" tells the story of Flight 93 United Airlines, which crashed in Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001. The aircraft was also kidnapped by terrorists, but did not reach its target. In the version told in the film, some passengers fought the terrorists and prevented the attack. In the movie "The Twin Towers" to the incident from the perspective of the rescuers. Nicolas Cage plays a sergeant of the Department of Port Police involved in the rescue of victims of the attack. The film "September 11" is a compilation of eleven short on terrorist attacks on America on 11 September 2001. One of them, Ken Loach, recalls that Salvador Allende was overthrown by the Chilean government on September 11, 1973, in the coup that started the military government in the country. In the movie "War on terror" explores US reaction to the attack through the offensive in the Middle East. In the long, an anti bomb squad of the US army is in action in full Iraq, in a post September 11 scenario.
