The Hubble Space Telescope

The Hubble Space Telescope (also known as HST) is an astronomical satelitte thats completing 25 years of spacial mission. the not manned brought several descoveries to science, making possible for the first time to see beyond the stars of our own galaxy and study the structure of the universe.

The HST, that wheights around 11 tons, is composed by a mirror of 2,4 meters of diameter, 3 cameras, 1 astromeric detector and two spectographs. The telescope turned 25 years last week, april 24th. It orbits arouns 552 kilometers of the earth in 28.000km per hour. It takes 97 minutes to contorn our planet.
Its not possible to see the sun yet. The more sensible equipments would burn if it "looked" at the king star. However, its energy of 2,8 watts is capted through two giant solar panels.

Unfortunately the HST has an expiration date. The estimate is that the functioning is interrupted, with no possibility of fixing, sometime around 2020. At the same time, the next substitiute telescope is being projected. We can still check out the images of the actual telescope in Nasa's oficial Website. In this site is possible to find many other informations about the telescope and its functioning.

- Movie

IMAX: Hubble 3D is a canadian-americam documentary film, released on 2010. Narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, the movie takes the viewer past of Saturn's aurora, the Helix Nebula (constellation of Aquarius), the "pillars of Creation" in the Eagle Nebula, the Andromeda Galaxy and the Butterfly Nebula.

Watch out!

During the days of 2 to 10 of may, people of porto alegre will be able to look at the skies and watch the giant spacial telescope. Due to some factors like the sun's height and the satelitte's angle of elevation, we can see it during specific hours: 10h42 AM, 12H28 AM, 2H09 PM, 3H50 PM and 5h32 PM.

  1. It might have been very expensive to construct this telescope. But the discoveries compensate.
